How much do you know about your washing machine

White Goods

A washing machine is something we all take for granted - until it goes wrong.

It has to be one of the most used items in the home today. It’s a magnificent labour-saving device that has been transformed over the years from luxury to necessity and there aren’t many homes now without one.

The benefits are obvious and the implications of having to do without one when it breaks down can be inconvenient at best and a complete nightmare at worst - the end of civilisation as we know it!

But just how much do you really know about this wonderful and most relied upon creation?

  • The washing machine dates back to the 1760s, although there was certainly nothing automatic about those early models. It was basically just a box that was rotated by hand.
  • What is believed to be the first electrically powered machine appeared in 1908. ‘The Thor’ was built by Chicago-based Hurley Electric Laundry Equipment Company.
  • It is estimated that 90% of washing in the home is done by women.
  • The washing machine is credited, in part at least, to getting women out of the home and into the workplace.
  • Several years ago it was estimated the washing machine consumed more than a fifth of the water used in the home. While washing machines have become more economical, there is little doubt your washing machine is still using more water than you might imagine.
  • Most modern machines are capable of loads of up to 5KG but the majority of us are only using half that capacity. Full loads are more cost-effective.
  • The life expectancy of a washing machine is on average 11 years.
  • About 96% of homes in the UK have a washing machine.

There are a number of big names competing for their share of a lucrative market and, while it’s true makes and models continue to evolve, the overall appearance and general workings are still much the same as they always were.

If you haven’t visited our Digiland store you may think we concentrate only on the home entertainment market - TVs, sound systems and so on, but we have a range of household items on offer and washing machines are among the most sought after.

End of the road for halogen light bulbs

You may be unaware of the Europe-wide ban on halogen light bulbs which came into effect on September 1. It brings to an end a 60-year history of halogen bulbs used as the lighting of choice in our homes and streets.
The halogen bulb is being replaced by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) which will cut emissions drastically and lead to reduced energy bills. Remaining stocks of halogen bulbs can still be sold and capsules, linear and low voltage incandescents used in oven lights will be exempt.

Why do I need a soundbar with my TV

Manufacturers are constantly competing with one another in an attempt to get one-up on their rivals and make their particular product the one of choice where it matters most, with the customer.
